The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
