European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
